LADY WULFRUN
Painting by Steve Dent
Lady Wulfrun a member of the Mercian Royal Dynasty was captured and taken prisoner in 943 A.D during a Viking raid on the Mercian capital of Tamworth. Whether her release was by ransom (Danegeld ) or due to military action seems unsure, however she was granted 10 hides of land in 985 by Aethelred the second. In 994 she donated some of this land including Peoles-hale to a newly founded monastry in what is now Wolverhampton. She had at least two sons Aelfhelm and Wulfric Spott. The painting shows Lady Wulfrun holding the Charter of 994 A.D which includes the name Peoles-hale ( Pelsall ).
