Pelsall Ghosts

A Mischievous Presence

There appears to be different kinds of Ghosts, some are seen but not heard, others are never seen yet their presence is felt by other means. The following story is one such example and is told by a lady who has lived in Pelsall all her life :-
Ever since we moved into our house thirty years ago, we have been aware of a certain presence. Nothing sinister or frightening, but a mischievous presence which moves things very occasionally but not often.
My first encounter was coming home from work and going up to the bathroom. I was quite surprised to see that everything was in the bath, brushes, shampoos, mats, in fact everying that could be moved. We had a collie dog at the time and my thoughts along the lines of him doing it, were more ridiculous than the thoughts of a mysterious event! Since that day, we have had one or two more strange things happen. One morning, a large picture of the race horse Red Rum had fallen off the wall. The nail was still in the wall and the string still on the back of picture. It lay on the stairs. The frame had contained a photograph of my Dad as a young man and I had covered this up with the picture of Red Rum..perhaps my Dad didnt think much of that, although he was a fan of horseracing and we actually all went to meet Red Rum at a local Nursery some years before after he won his Grand Nationals.
The strangest thing that happened was having my hair pulled in the bathroom..really hard and this I could not explain, but I felt it quite clearly. I must admit everyone looks at me rather oddly when I tell them this. One day I was telling a friend about our 'ghost' and there was a tinkle in the hearth. On the shelf stood a statue of a crinoline lady, which we bought from an antique shop in Bala, Wales. It was completely undamaged before this incident, but when I looked in the hearth, the arm had fallen off the statue...even my friend had to agree it was strange as I was talking about ghosts at the time. We have had three dogs whilst living here and each one has from time to time stared up at the ceiling and appeared to be following something with their eyes. You may think perhaps a fly, but we never saw one and it sometimes happened in the bedroom, as our last dog used to come up and sleep in there.
These incidents may not seem a lot in thirty years, but last year my next door neighbour who moved in at the same time told me that her son had been terrified by somebody walking through the wall and that he could not sleep because of it. She asked an old lady who lived across the road what used to be in the grounds where our houses now are. This lady said that many many years ago, there was a Manse there and that a young boy doing some work there had committed suicide by hanging himself. I have never followed this story up, but I think somewhere it would be recorded. Could this be our ghost? I t would be very interesting to know more about that. A local vicar visited after my mother died and he remarked what a nice ambience our house had. We told him of the ghost and he offered to walk through...he even fetched his bible from the car.. When he came back into the room he said that he thought we had a presence, but it would never do us any harm. Well ours is a peaceful house most of the time, but who knows, someone may be watching over us. Lets hope so!
